While social worker turnover has long been a challenge for child welfare agencies across the country, turnover is occurring now at levels never before seen. Unfortunately, agencies are struggling to fill those positions at a time when enrollment in social work baccalaureate programs is down resulting in a shortage of qualified workers entering the field; the nature of the work is emotionally demanding and draining, but even more so as cases are becoming more complex; and the challenges and hardships of the pandemic have forced many to reassess their career and the lifestyle they want to live, further contributing to what is being called “The Great Resignation.” For many agencies already struggling to meet daily demand with the resources they have, the social worker shortage further compounds the capacity crisis.
